Police seize' Crime Watch Tape, My take on Idiot Alleyne.

Police have seized a tape from TV6 , specifically the tape showing the rape of a 13 year old girl on crime watch..

This means hopefully that some move towards prosecuting the persons responsible for airing the rape on national television SEVERAL TIMES ...
Authorities seek to lay charges under the sexual offences act according to the article , which may result in a jail term of several years for whoever is convicted.

I personally have nothing but contempt for Alleyne , who seems to care only for his own gain above all else. He is reported to be a dental technician by profession (lower than a dentist..) and is not qualified to be talking about issues of Law and national security , he isn't even fully qualified to do a root canal...
He's basically Trinidad's Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck , alot of charisma but no education . A ton of arrogance but no substance.

I previously sent a letter to the papers (which was never published, probably due to the Express's ties to tv6 and crime watch... and the defamatory tone) which is attached below.
Alleyne and the media personnel associated with broadcasting the sex tape most definitely committed a crime in doing so. The only question is how will a case be made against them?
Alleyne can claim he had no direct control over the editing of the video and didn't intend to air obscenity . This can be defeated by showing he generally has great creative control over the course of the show.
Even if there was no initial intention to air obscenities , the episode in question was aired several times . There was ample opportunity to stop or censor the broadcast after public outrage at the sex tape was heard.
Alleyne's response as well, shows no shame or acknowledgment of wrongdoing , just plain arrogance...

Despite any good work he may have done in the past , he has gone too far, and allowing him to continue will only prove how lawless and chaotic the nation has become. To let this offence slide because he's a 'good man' ( as his supporters allege ) is tantamount to allowing a child molester to walk the streets freely because he gives to charity.
A few good deeds do not wipe away crimes against the moral fabric of a nation.

Jail The Crime Watch Criminal .
In showing the rape of a 13 year old girl on national television , Ian alleyne went too far . Alleyne broke both moral law and the law of the land and must be punished . No man is above the law.
Section 46(g) of the summary offences act states :
“Any person who offers for sale or distribution or who exhibits to public view, any

profane, indecent, or obscene book, paper, print, drawing, painting or

representation, shall be liable to imprisonment for 2 months.”
Alleyne showed an obscene video to thousands of viewers on national television . This is possibly THE most flagrant and wide reaching breach of its kind ever to happen in T&T history. This cannot go unpunished.
I call upon the authorities to enforce the law and bring Alleyne to justice. While he has done good works in the past , this does not absolve him of his crime. He must be punished just as any other criminal .
No man is above the law and crime cannot be solved by committing crime.
I also call upon Mr. Alleyne to issue a national apology for his wrongdoing.

RE: Law on this issue , this is bound to be an interesting case that can bring Jurisprudence (philosophy of law) and international law issues into play. There has never been a crime quite like this before, so the laws seeking to punish it will not exactly 'cover' it .
However in past common law cases ( Shaw v DPP) judges have done legal gymnastics to protect 'the moral fabric of society' against obscene publications and the like .
A major influence on this case will hopefully be the International convention on the Rights of the child . International law of this nature exerts a strong influence on our domestic laws , and any ambiguous laws must be interpreted in line with international trends even if they weren't in the past. ( did a 10,000 word paper on this if anyone wants to read) .

Since this case involves a video of an underaged girl being raped, the convention applies .

No respect for persons with mental conditions.

Update : This photo was shared all across facebook to encourage the bashing of this young man and his victimization, once again showing that Trinidad culture is very immature when it comes to dealing with mental illness.
This young man is innocent until proven guilty and does not deserve to be harassed , if something is wrong with him he needs compassion and help.
"Schizo"pleads guilty to assault on magistrate

This headline ran in the guardian on Thursday December 22nd 2011. Typical sensationalist journalism that we'v become used to in this country. This is a society that encourages and consents to Ian Alleyne airing crime footage , including the rape of an underage girl . During the Port of Spain bombings the papers ran a front page photo of an elderly woman with her foot severed...

But the cheap, sensational nature of local journalism isn't what i want to address today. The bigger issue here is one with the whole of Trini society :

There is no respect and little compassion for persons suffering from mental conditions.

The Guardian headline is indicative of this problem. It implies that 'Shizos' have criminal tenancies and are violent by nature . The use of 'Shizo' effectively dehumanizes and marginalizes this man.

It's no different from 'fag' , 'coolie' or 'nigger' in its effect , you're picking out one characteristic of a human being and using it to define their entire existence.

Trinbagonian society is full of persons suffering from mental conditions, we all know at least one person suffering from one. Whether it be clinical depression or bipolar disorder.
But there is little understanding and support for these people.

Suicide is a serious problem in our country as a result. For many couples the threat of ‘I go kill myself if you leave me’ is a common threat (I heard of someone saying this just this week).
We’v had cases where teenagers hung themselves over exam stress or because of relationships.

Mental health is a very serious problem, yet its treated as a joke by many.

I’v dated a girl who had to see a psychologist for counseling, and she made me promise never to tell anyone about it out of shame. I know of another young woman who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and likewise keeps it a secret out of shame.
The added stress and self-conscious embarrassment associated with these conditions makes it harder to cope on a day to day basis. How is a person supposed to recover from depression if going to counseling makes them feel ashamed, and even more depressed?

This cultural disrespect and irreverence towards mental illness must change for the better. Do your part and educate others on this issue, remind them it’s no laughing matter ,lives are at stake
